NYMMO does winter-watch.

North Yorkshire Moors Moorland Organisation

Although some might be seeing signs of spring we thought we would bring some footage from winter on the NYMMO estates.

Starting with some night film footage of a Roe deer (Carpreolus carpreolus) grazing happily on crab apples, this is a young male or Buck, the female is know as a Doe (as in the song). When mated the female uses delayed or suspended implantation so that the young are born in May/June when the weather will give them the best chance of survival.

Roe are the most common species of native deer in the UK. Although deer are controlled to prevent damage to trees and agricultural crops they have legal protection under the Deer Act 1991.
