Hare today…
Calderdale Moorland Group
Here in Calderdale we are still experiencing new life on the moors.
This is a leveret a young hare our gamekeeper found while out on the moor, he picked it up and quickly check if it was healthy and tick free before returning it back where he found it.
Baby hares are born with eyes open and a full coat of fur, and they're left alone by their mother from a very young age, they live out in the open, in a shallow hole in the ground. During the day, their mother will stay nearby to watch over them and she'll come back to feed them at night. The young are independent when about three weeks old but take eight months to reach their adult weight. A female may produce three or four litters a year.
