Fruits of the fell

Forest of Bowland Moorland Group

One of the most spectacular products from moorland is obviously game that is harvested but there is plenty of other products which are harvested from our heather moorland. Heather honey is definitely to be celebrated!

Honey bees have been used for thousands of years by humans. A worker bee lives a maximum 40 days and a single bee will create about one 12th of a teaspoon of honey during her lifetime. It takes 2 million flower visits for a honeybee colony to produce 500g of honey.

One of the keepers in the Forest of Bowland keeps bees and makes heather honey. Heather honey is thought to be a superfood with strong antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. More benefits of managed moorland!
