Fungal matters
Nidderdale Moorland Group
A little bit of colour to start the day! The warm damp autumn we are experiencing at present is bringing out a wide diversity of colourful toadstools on our moorlands and in our upland woods. A day out beating is a perfect opportunity to spot these fungal curiosities which seem to appear mysteriously.
From Waxcaps, Puffballs, Earthballs and deadly Amanitas to the impressive Cauliflower Fungus, Spindles and Clubs, there is a plethora of fungi to be seen at present, who fulfil important roles in our ecosystems as they aid growth of trees and play a vital role in the decay and recycling of nutrients.
Please remember to look, but don't touch. Many species can be deadly poisonous and correct identification can be difficult
